How to choose the right AI model for the job
Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek — they are not interchangeable. A short guide to picking the model that fits the task in front of you.
With hundreds of models a click away, the hardest part is often deciding which one to ask. The good news: you don't need to memorise benchmarks. A few rules of thumb cover most everyday work.
Start with the task, not the model
Before picking a model, name what you need: a careful long answer, a quick draft, working code, or something creative. Different models lean in different directions, and the same prompt can produce very different results.
- Long documents and careful reasoning: try a large flagship model first.
- Quick questions and short drafts: a fast, lightweight model is usually enough.
- Code: ask two models and compare — small differences matter here.
- Creative writing: personality varies a lot between models, so experiment.
When in doubt, compare
If you're not sure, send the same prompt to two or three models with Compare and read the answers side by side. You'll quickly learn which ones match your taste — and you'll catch mistakes that a single answer would hide.
Free models are a great default
For everyday questions, the free models in EchoGPT are often all you need. Switch to an advanced model when the answer really matters, or when the free one gets stuck.
